Powerful piece Kelly. I have not seen Barbie yet but I have printed the text of Gloria's speech and have posted it in my office where hopefully it will stay for a long time. Every single word of it resonates with me. I no longer care if some male objects to the speech being posted in my office, and some one will because they will feel threatened by it. I'm not taking it down because every single word of it is true.

I love your take on Taylor! I’m so impressed that she has captured the whole world right now...my 6yo nieces and my 33yo friends are all obsessed with her!

I’m not personally getting “child free icon” vibes from Barbie though. I haven’t seen the movie yet so maybe I’m missing a big point, but in my mind Barbie is like in her 20s (Mattel says she’s 19) and is a baby adult fresh out of college who hasn’t had to make any difficult life choices yet despite the fact that she’s an astronaut/doctor/barista or whatever her job of the week is.

Love this column! I am not a fan of TS...I couldn’t tell you one note of one song. BUT I totally appreciate the fans and realize just how important her message is, especially to young girls. Haven’t seen Barbie yet, but going to see it with my husband...we are in our 70s. He thinks he is a feminist, and he is at times. From what I have heard and a lot of that is what he told me, I would NEVER have been attracted to him when I was young. He has come a long way...not far enough, but I give him some credit. As far as people who are clueless about your chosen child-free life, set them straight! Not easy, but important!

Can't wait to hear what you both think of the movie!

Love this, but wondering why Beyoncé isn’t included in this? I know she’s not a single childless woman, but her tour has also brought in a ton of $ into the economy and her shows (from what I’ve heard and seen) are just as amazing and feel like she should also be included in the summer of women.

I hear ya! I didn't include Beyoncé in this particular essay because she's a married mom :) The focus of this piece was really about celebrating and really seeing two women who are single and childfree, so it felt misplaced to me to include her here.

Thanks for replying. I assumed that was the theme, but just wanted to make sure :)

Totally agree with all of this Kelly, as per BUT I have to say that I didn’t love Barbie, sorry! I was bored and I think I was also overexposed??

The Gloria speech felt an absolute rip off of Chimamanda’s “we should all be feminists” to me..? Like it was important and I’m glad it was seen in such a mainstream way but still, it did feel a bit of a rip off! (That was actually featured in the Beyoncé song Flawless, a few years ago now!)

Barbie is getting a ton of mixed reviews for sure, I think that's partially why it's such an interesting movie!

"I feel like the women in our country need a nice group cry right now." Thanks for this piece--so beautifully written and really resonates. Both the Eras tour and Barbie were super cathartic after a very hard few years, and part of me wishes this summer could go on forever. (I say as I try to figure out how to see TS again next year and what's the best way to hold on to a piece of Barbie.) My (male) fiance also loved Barbie and said he would buy the DVD if that were still a thing. He does listen to "I'm Just Ken" a little too much though...

I'm sure it will come out on Prime or something eventually and maybe he can "buy" it there?! 😂💕

I attended Saturday’s show and it made me so happy to see her bust into a huge grin when she sang “so make the friendship bracelets...” line of YOYOK while the crowd erupted and put their bracelet-filled arms up
